Chapter 1

Pallet. A small town in the region of Kanto, located just below Viridian City. It was a comfortable place, where everyone knew each other and things were relatively calm. Home to kind and welcoming people, including the renowned Professor Oak, this isolated town is where our journey begins…

-

“Get back here!”

“Hahaha, you’ll never be able to catch me like that!”

“No fair, you know I’m no good at this game!”

A woman looks out a window, smiling warmly as she sees her son and his best friend running around, just as they had done for as long as she could remember. She sips on a cup of coffee and turns on the TV.

“This is a Public Service Announcement. According to local citizens, wild Pokémon have run amok. There is no need for worry, however. Kanto’s finest scientists are currently researching the cause, and are attempting to find a remedy. For the time being, we strongly advise you to exercise caution and stay away from tall grass. I repeat – stay away from tall grass.”

The program returns to its original broadcast, leaving the woman unable to do anything but stare at the screen in absolute horror. She drops her mug and sprints towards the door.

“ERIC! ERIC, COME INSIDE!”

No response.

She steps outside and sees that her neighbor has the same look of worry on her face. Together, they walk towards the other building that rests in Pallet.

The sounds of feet hitting the ground slows to a stop. The two kids have run off farther than expected, landing them on an unfamiliar road.

“Look what you did, you got us lost!”

“Maybe if you tagged me sooner, this wouldn’t have happened! Don’t blame everything on me!”

“Whatever. We have to get back to town, my mom’s probably worried sick.”

“How do we get back? I don’t know where we are…”

“Gary, you were always the one that was good with directions, not me! You can’t possibly expect me to know!”

“Calm down, nothing’s gonna happen. Maybe we’ll even get to see some Pokémon on the way! Let’s try going this way.”

The pair began walking down the path, hoping both for their safety and a satisfaction for their curiosity.

“Hey Eric, what do you think we’ll get to s-“

Gary stopped when he felt something twitch beneath his foot. He quickly lifted his leg to see that he had stepped on a tail that belonged to a Pokémon, who was now beyond irritated. In a state of anger, the orange Pokémon rushed towards the two, claws extended, when an object struck the Charmander. It disappeared with a bright flash, and the ball gave three quick jerks before it fell still.

“Are you two okay?!” yelled a familiar voice, and the kids turned to see Professor Oak stepping over a bush to pick up his PokeBall.

“Yeah we’re fine, Gramps,” Gary let out, acting as if he were unfazed by the entire incident. Eric looked down, only to see his best friend shaking in his shoes. Not that it was his fault though, the attack was pretty traumatizing.

“You two have to be careful. Wild Pokémon are extremely dangerous, and lately, they’ve been acting strange. Come back to town with me, your families are worried about you.”

Eric let out a sigh of relief. Professor Oak was pretty old, but he emitted an aura of safety, almost like he knew he’d be safe under Oak’s protection. They walk behind the professor when suddenly, Gary punches Eric in the arm.

“Tell anyone that I was scared, and you’ll get it.”

Eric lets out a smile, followed by one from Gary, and they both laugh as if nothing ever happened. Professor Oak rolls his eyes and also smiles, staring at the beautiful sunset that loomed over the small town of Pallet.

“Do it. I want to see that town gone. Make it disappear from the face of the world.”
